Exploring Vanuatu: Plants, People and Traditional Culture
For over a decade, NYBG scientists Gregory Plunkett and Michael Balick have worked with local communities—sometimes in remote island areas never before visited by botanists—to document nearly extinct languages as well as the plants used for food, medicine, housing, and even communication. Plunkett and Balick will share insights from their project, including the role kava, Piper methysticum, plays in Pacific Island culture. They'll prepare a traditional kava drink, one that promotes relaxation, storytelling, and conflict resolution, so students can experience its effects.
